THE HEARL/EARL FAMILY OF BERWICK, MAINE
Our first known Hearl family member in the new world was William, born about 1660, location unknown. Much research has been conducted trying to find his ancestry, with no results to date. The family name Hearl is common in Scotland, Ireland and of course England, not much to go on!
Much credit leading up to this family genealogy is given to Joseph C. Anderson in his article "Hearl/Earl Family of Berwick, Maine" as published by the York County Genealogical Society, 1992/1993.
Mr. Anderson's article gives us some tantalizing clues for further research on our Williams ancestry. In the reference "Noyes, Libby and Davis Genealogy Dictionary of Maine" states that our William was "nearly" related to one John Hearl of Kittery who bought land in Berwick on June 1679. This John Hearl sold land on 27 August 1681, one Thomas Hearl being a witness. Our William was seeming related to one Allen Firs/Virs, an early Newichawannock planter, whos estate William administered. In his will, Allen refered to William "as my loving cousin".
So! with that, there is our William, a Thomas and a John Hearl and Allen Furs/Virrs all seemingly in the area at a time frame of late 1600's to earle 1700's. Perhaps a search of genealogical records of the UK is in order!
